being basically entirely unacquainted with tv quizzes, reading this felt a bit like when you're sitting a foreign language exam at school and you're like 'I know all these words in theory but I'm not sure how to make sense of them all together. there is a man...and he has a bridge...and there's a void...' enjoyed reading as always though for your clever and funny writing. can't wait to watch when you make your tv quiz debut!!
Thank you Ruby. This one didn't land quite as well as others, so it's nice to know that at least you're out there going 'uh huh, Ross Kemp's got a bridge, I get it!'
My daughter is a massive fan of The Wheel, so I've endured that. You can't beat Supermarket Sweep for utter cheap tv. It takes me back to being on the dole in the 90s (I think it was on then?). A most enjoyable read Lewis and I admire your discipline. 2000 words by lunchtime. Wow.
Among all your options for afternoon entertainment, how about a, I don't know...book? 🤣
So I'm way out of touch and have been outside the UK for way too long, so much as Ruby said, I'm not quite sure if I know all these modern-day shows. I know Pointless simply from Richard Osman's appearances on Fighting Talk, and I think someone called Jenny from The Chase also appears on FT.
I'm old school so my fond memories are with Blockbusters (the theme music never fails to pull at the heart strings, so much nostalgia), Countdown (pre-Colin Murray), which my Granny and I often watched together. It's not quite the same but The Crystal Maze was another favourite. There was also another one whose name I forget, it was the school challenge where they did obstacle courses and finished up in the swimming pool, I loved that as a wee bairn.
Let me also point out that I find Heidi Range so hot. Feel free to block me over this admission 😂
Terrible time to read, for me anyway. I always nod off when I read at home. Always.
Jenny from The Chase is Jenny 'The Vixen' Ryan, probably the second toughest of all the chasers. She's a bit of a pop culture nerd, so if I was on the show I'd want to go head to head with her. Game recognises game.
There is (or was, not sure it's still there) a Crystal Maze experience in London. Great fun so long as you don't get locked in!
I very much enjoyed this. Reminded me of long hours spent in hotel rooms in New Zealand last year. NZ is gorgeous but the tv is woeful, mostly imported. They cling to Emmerdale and Coronation Street and several different versions of The Chase.
One thing you could count on finding at any time of the day was Tipping Point.
When my daughter and I reached the end of our tethers, we would look at each other and say "Is it time to turn on Ben Shephard"?
If we were lucky, we got Warwick Davis and Tenable.
If we were unlucky, we got a.n. other weird, foreign version of Countdown. A simple observation is that the greater the prize money, the lower the calibre of contestants.
I don't know what it is, but I've never got on with Tenable. Might be the format, or maybe I only have so much capacity for different gimmicks. Maybe I'll drop Shep for Willow (WD will always be Willow to me).
I must admit that I never really got Tenable either but my daughter explained it to me very slowly and patiently and I realised that maybe there wasn't that much to get. Rather like my granny's addiction to Deal or No Deal. Sometimes you just need a flavour of home.
My two favourites are Winning Combination and Only Connect, because of their subtly anarchic presenters. This has led to thoughts of fantasy Only Connect, where Omid presents and Victoria gets to make up a team with her excessively gifted family members. It would be very different.
Only Connect is its own separate thing. Calling those Monday night heavyweights quiz shows is like calling Windsor Castle a house. They're proper intellectual workouts.
I think so ! Didn’t they have have to answer questions and then dash around the supermarket to see how much they could stuff in their trolley 🛒🤦🏻♀️🤣 Dale Winton.

Thanks Margaret. I don't hit 2k by lunchtime every day, but it's nice when it happens.
Supermarket Sweep was definitely 90s. I only know this because one of Sleeper's early videos was a play on it, complete with a cameo from Dale.

Don't worry, we won't fall out over Heidi Range.

🤣🤣🤣 I can’t see what I’m typing here? The whole screen is black ? I’ll come back if I can fix it ? Or did you change colour on your page
Uh oh, that's not good. No, haven't changed any colours - only change I made was drop caps, which were shit so I changed them back.
Was Supermarket Sweep a quiz? I honestly can't remember.

Aside from Dale, I remember very little. That's a YouTube hole for me to go down tomorrow morning.
Oh I can see it when I post, just not as I type it. I wanted to say, I’ve not watched a quiz since Super market sweep. 🤣🤣
